Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria in western Bulgaria with a population of just over one million. It has a mixture of densely built up areas with very little green open spaces and other areas that are wide open and resemble a green belt. The architecture of the city is varied and includes Roman, medieval and Byzantine. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built during the late 19th century and is one of the most visited in Sofia along with one of the buildings the 10th century Boyana Church, which has been designated a World Heritage Site.
The museums on offer in Sofia include the National Historical Museum with artefacts dating from Prehistory to the modern era, and the Natural History Museum and the National Museum of Military History with its collection of various armaments. One of Sofia’s most interesting monuments is the remains of The Eastern Gate from the days when Sofia was Serdika and Sredets which are exhibited in the underpass connecting the Presidential Palace and The Ministerial Council.
