Car Hire in Latvia

Latvia is officially known as the Republic of Latvia and is one of the Baltic countries situated in Northern Europe along with Estonia and Lithuania. It is divided into 118 municipalities which account for109 counties and 9 cities with Riga being the capital and largest city. Tourists will find that although the country is fairly small, it has a varied landscape which includes long sandy beaches and at least 6 other UNESCO world heritage sites. Latvia is home to a large number of spectacular buildings including medieval churches and palaces.

Latvia is still proud of its pagan traditions such as Summer Solstice when bonfires are lit along the hills and people celebrate the shortest night of the year. Latvia also holds celebrations enjoyed by Christians and Hebrews as well as the Slavic within cultures. Latvia has many castles to visit and enjoy and some of the earliest surviving ruins where built by during the 13th century including the Turaida Castle, with its red walls which you can see as they rise above the Gauja valley. Some castles such as the Bauska Castle are partially restored and others such as the Ventspils Castle are fully restored but the most exciting castle of all is the residence of the President of Latvia which is located in the capital city of Riga, the Riga Castle built during the early 15th century.

As well as castles and churches, Latvia has a long list of manor houses that once housed the local gentry ranging in architectural style from rococo to baroque and many of which have now been converted into luxury spa hotels for everyone to enjoy.
