Enterprise Holdings is backing the proposal to end local car hire excise taxes.

Enterprise Holdings, which runs National Car Rental, Alamo Rent A Car and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, has publicly stated its support of rental customers. The group is supporting H.R. 4175, a bill in the US Congress called the End Discriminatory State Taxes for Automobile Renters Act of 2009.

Enterprise has also said it will start public advocacy in support of customers of its WeCar automobile-sharing initiative. Enterprise further plans to highlight to government officials the unintended results of levying excise taxes on local car rentals.

Through regional subsidiary firms, Enterprise Holdings operates the biggest fleet in the world of fuel-efficient vehicles. Raymond T. Wagner, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs said Enterprise Holdings has been active for years in its efforts to raise awareness of what it calls ‘these unfair taxes’. The company criticises the taxes as arbitrary, discriminatory and misleading.

Wagner testified before the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law on 15 June. Testifying alongside Wagner was Sally Greenberg, Executive Director of the National Consumers League. Enterprise Holdings and the National Consumers League complain that local rental taxes result in unfair financial burdens on low-income families and consumers seeking sustainable forms of transportation.
