The icon London cab remains the most popular in the world.

Londoners may have grown blasé about the constant stream of black Hackney carriages that flow through the British capital from its biggest roads to its best-kept short cuts but the world still reckons the black cab is the best taxi in the world. The global popularity of the London cab has been revealed in the findings of a new survey.

The survey of world travellers found that London’s cabs at least provide something for the heady prices, being rated both the most expensive and the best taxis on the planet. More than a quarter of respondents voted for the London cab as number-one taxis on Earth.

With some 28 per cent of those surveyed giving the London cab a thumbs up, it is clear that the London cabbies must be doing something right. The closest competitor – the New York taxi – languished far behind in second place with just nine per cent of votes cast in the study.

Asia’s expanding reputation amongst business and leisure travellers was displayed clearly in the findings. The taxis of Tokyo and Hong Kong tied for third place, each garnering seven per cent of votes.

London cabs didn’t have everything to themselves, however. New York taxis were voted as the most available by 32 per cent of the survey’s respondents. The famous yellow New York taxis performed dismally when it came to getting people to their destination, being voted worst for local knowledge (11 per cent).
