Rental cars are short in many US locations weeks after the destruction of hurricane Sandy.

Reports said on the day before the country’s Thanksgiving holiday that the so-called ‘superstorm’ had caused substantial damage to the fleets of major car rental firms, leaving fewer available. Officials from insurance firm Progressive alone said that the company had received damage claims for some 38,000 vehicles.

The effect has been exacerbated by high demand, as the holiday typically sees millions of Americans return home for an extended weekend. Meanwhile, some transport systems are still dealing with lingering issues in the wake of the storm.

News agency NBC reported on Wednesday night that almost no cars are left at many airports on the US Eastern Seaboard. One passenger headed for New York’s LaGuardia airport said that they’ve only been able to find cars with one agency, which is charging hundreds of dollars per day.

But rental agencies have worked to cope with the shortage by shuttling cars into the region from other parts of the country. Many are also renting older vehicles that had been slated for sale, according to reports.
