Bergen has a long history of trade through its association with the sea going back to medieval times.  The site of the old wharf features on UNESCO’s World Heritage list and its remains are one of the best known in Norway.  The whole area where the city’s merchants used to live is still visible through its alleyways and through exhibits in the Hanseatic Museum. Visitors can look around the Royal Residence and banqueting hall was built during the 13th century and is opposite another architectural gem the Rosenkrantz Tower.
