Changi, the site of the main international airport in Singapore is located at the eastern end of Singapore. During WWII it was also the location for Changi Prison a former Japanese Prisoner of War. Many inmates went on to document their time there and James Clavell based his novel King Rat on his experiences as a prisoner.
Changi has also been known as Franklin Point after Captain Franklin an early surveyor of Singapore Island. The Boardwalk area of Changi was part of an urban regeneration project to be included in as part of the Singapore Green Plan 2012 to enhance Changi point. The first phase was completed in 2003; the second phase was completed in 2006. Located on the western part of Changi Point the boardwalk connects Changi Beach Club in the western end to the Changi Sailing Club and the Changi Point Ferry Terminal. The boardwalk is has wide footpaths which lead from the road towards the coast and with the romantic night-lights, offers visitors a chance to enjoy the coastline and picturesque scenery along the way including fabulous trees such as the giant Damar Gajah Hitam and Tampines tree. There are jogging and cycling tracks and fitness areas.
