Officials are advising drivers in London to stay away from the M4 motorway in the coming days.

The Highways Agency said on Monday that maintenance and repair works on a substantial portion of the motorway in west London would not be completed until the end of the week.

The news comes despite the portion of the M4 between junctions 1 and 2 reopening in both directions on Monday. The section had been previously shut due to ongoing repair works, which will keep the artery closed between junctions 2 and 3 for several additional days.

The M4 is one of the capital’s main links westward and serves as a primary link to Heathrow airport. Repair works commenced weeks ago shortly after the Highways Agency said that stress cracking was found at the heavily travelled Boston Manor Viaduct bridge section.

Transport officials have said that motorists heading to Heathrow and points west today and through the next three days should consider alternative routes via the M40 and the M3. Meanwhile, travellers bound for central London are able to join the M4 at junction 2, although travellers should plan for delays due to the ongoing closure of two eastbound lanes.

Highway Agency heads have said that all work should be completed before the Olympics begin on 27 July.
