Those commuting through London should allow for extra time on the first working day during the Olympics, officials say.

Numerous substantially large events are set to be held in several locations in the Olympic host city today, including several at the Olympic Park in east London, as well as in Wembley, Wimbledon and Greenwich. Officials said restrictions would be in place for 10 different venues around the city.

And commuters were warned at the weekend via the city’s dedicated Olympic transport website, which said that workers travelling to their workplace today will need extra time because the Olympic road network system will be in full operation throughout the day. Commuters are also being asked to go online to see specific areas that are best avoided, notably London Bridge.

The news comes on the heels of a successful response to city officials’ calls for "rerouting, retiming and remoding" transport routes on Friday to give way for the opening ceremony crowd. Reports said traffic levels were some 15 per cent below normal on Friday following the request.

However, this Friday will see a full day of athletics at the 80,000 Olympic stadium and poses a greater challenge.

Officials said that many of those heading to work, as well as to Heathrow and Gatwick will turn to public transport to avoid delays this week.
