Car hire firm Hertz has been named number one among car rental brands operating in New Zealand.

Chosen by a panel of judges at the first ever New Zealand Travel Industry Awards, Hertz took the title of Best Car/Campervan Rental Operator. Officials said that rental providers were rated on several different factors including customer service, innovation, internal culture and business performance.

Hertz Corporation president and chief executive Mark P Frissora said regarding the recognition that the award reflects ongoing hard work by all employees of Hertz New Zealand. He added that the company was “honoured” to receive the award, especially at the very first version of the award ceremony.

Officials from the award organsiation said that the recognitions are aimed at celebrating and rewarding companies from all areas of the travel industry within New Zealand.

The news comes amid heavy press coverage of the US-based car hire provider after it announced last month that it has entered a deal to buy smaller rental firm Dollar Thrifty for $2.3 billion (£1.4 billion).

The takeover will conclude a two-year struggle by both Hertz and Avis Budget to acquire the rival. However, Hertz will remain the second largest firm in the US market following the deal behind Enterprise Holdings, which operates Alamo, National Car Rental and Enterprise Rent a Car.
